The Face of the Democratic Party

Abstract

Saint Mary’s Professor of Politics Steve Woolpert was interviewed on KTVU-FOX2’s Sunday Morning News program on April 28, 2019. Woolpert discussed the significance of the visit by Democratic presidential hopeful Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke to the Bay Area and the impact of California moving its primary from June to March 2020. Woolpert noted that the shift could prove to be influential and take the focus off of the Iowa caucuses, traditionally held in early February, as the geographic location where candidates need to fare well to be considered as viable contenders for the Oval Office. The politics professor also discussed the number of candidates (now at 20) in the race for the Democratic nomination for president and the internal struggle for the new face of the party.
