Abstract
For nearly three quarters of a century, the Collegiate Seminar Program has been the cornerstone of the general education requirement at Saint Mary’s College of California , a Catholic liberal arts university with approximately 2800 undergraduates. Over the past eight years, the College has been immersed in a process of collaboratively re-envisioning its entire core curriculum, including the Seminar Program. We have endeavored to facilitate a democratic, inclusive and transparent community process which respects the values and traditions of our institution while also identifying and integrating best practices from across the nation. In multiple formats, the process has highlighted collective reflection, earnest consultation and genuine engagement among faculty, students and administrators. Throughout we have embraced a firm commitment to ongoing and frank inquiry into the educational effectiveness of our curriculum, relying on innovative measures of student learning. This presentation will outline our process and share the lessons learned.
