Abstract

The Catholic Voice, the news outlet of the Oakland Diocese, features the commentary “ Asking the right questions about clerical abuse of children ” by Theology and Religious Studies Professor Anne Carpenter. First published on the Cummins Institute blog, the opinion piece explores the role of Catholic institutions of higher education in responding to the present crisis and controversy in the Catholic Church, which has been scarred by ongoing reports of sexual abuse, including a cover up of child sexual abuse by more than 300 priests over 70 years in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania report has prompted investigations into sexual abuse by priests in Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, and New Mexico.
