Research Interests:
My research focus is on the genetic and molecular pathways of germ cell (gamete) and embryo development, across species. The goals of this work using frog (Xenopus), mouse (Mus musculus), human, and other species, is to uncover key conserved genetic factors of gamete development and fertility. This work may have potential translational implications for improving the diagnosis and treatment of human infertility and diseases associated with the reproductive lifespan, as well as developing applications for the conservation of endangered species.
Creative & Extracurricular Interests:
I am both scientist and artist and believe that much of science, and how the subject matter is captured, studied, and conveyed is actually art. In my spare time I am involved in all kinds of artistic endeavors including: drawing/painting, jewelry making, crafty projects, and dancing! I also love outdoor activities and strongly believe in the importance of taking care of ones self. Excuses including not having enough time just don't work with me. Health and fitness is very important -- not only for maintaining all of the organ systems of the body as you age (bones, muscles, heart, lungs, nervous system, etc.) and preventing various diseases including heart disease, obesity, diabetes and neurological diseases, but also for greater energy, sense of well-being and fun! My latest adventures have included training and competing in many triathalons, where I swim, bike and run my heart out! Setting and achieving goals, strengthening friendships, the sense of accomplishment that comes along with this, and the positive effects on your body -- are all major benefits. I am still thinking about what my next challenge will be....
