Dr. Mary Candace Raygoza is an Associate Professor of Education at Saint Mary’s College of California and teaches courses including Humanizing Education Methods, Teaching for Social Justice, Praxis Seminar, and Youth Participatory Action Research. Dr. Raygoza earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with an Education minor at UC Berkeley and a mathematics teaching credential and MEd, followed by a PhD in Urban Schooling, at UC Los Angeles. She is a former high school mathematics teacher in East Los Angeles, where she taught Algebra and Geometry, with a commitment to teaching about the social and political world through mathematics and supporting her students to develop as researchers and change agents though Youth Participatory Action Research.
Dr. Raygoza is the PI on a National Science Foundation grant to design the STEM Teachers for Justice, Community, and Leadership teaching pathway at Saint Mary’s. She is a former STaR fellow with the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. Her publications include articles in the journals Urban Education, Journal of Urban Mathematics Education, Bank Street’s Occasional Paper Series and chapters in the book High School Mathematics Lessons to Explore, Understand, and Respond to Social Injustice. She is a co-author of a forthcoming book on middle school mathematics teaching and social justice.
She has presented at a number of national and international conferences including the American Educational Research Association, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, California Council on Teacher Education, Creating Balance in an Unjust World, and the International Congress on Mathematics Education. Most recently she served as an invited speaker with NCTM’s 100 Days of Professional Learning in the webinar “Humanizing Online Mathematics Teaching.” Dr. Raygoza serves on the Research Committee of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators and on the editorial board of the Journal of Urban Mathematics Education. Her current research study is entitled Teachers on a Collective Journey of Transforming Urban Mathematics Education for Equity and Social Justice.
